What is Douban Movies?

Douban Movies is the film and television area of Douban, a broader Chinese cultural community. The official movie site lets users discover titles, record what they want to watch or have watched, assign ratings, and write reviews. Film pages and discussion make it a useful entry point into Chinese-language audience responses.

The wider Douban service also includes other cultural and community products. A movie list should therefore be interpreted as a specific film-related surface, not a complete view of everything discussed across Douban.

How does Douban compare with IMDb and Letterboxd?

IMDb is a useful analogy for title records and audience scores; Letterboxd helps explain personal film logs, reviews, and lists. Douban is its own community, with a different user base, discussion conventions, and scoring system. Numerical ratings are not directly comparable across the three services without examining how they were produced.

Who supplies the opinions?

Viewer ratings, short reactions, and longer reviews are distinct from a film's descriptive record. A detailed review may explain a critic's reading; a score summarizes a set of user evaluations. Neither should be described as the opinion of all Chinese audiences. Check sample size, the timing of a release, and whether the text actually discusses the film.

Is a movie rank the same as a rating?

No. A rating is a score associated with the title; rank is the title's position in a particular list. Current screenings, word-of-mouth lists, and other selections answer different questions. ThreadEast labels a source rating separately from ranking position. A high rating does not establish box-office revenue, and a popular listing does not prove critical consensus.

Can guests browse, and how should English readers use it?

Public movie records and reviews are usually readable without signing in; our October 10 homepage check was accessible. Rating a film, keeping a personal log, and other interactions generally require an account. Match the original title, release year, and director when identifying a film in English, since translated titles can overlap. Cite a specific review for its argument and the film page for its displayed rating.

What ThreadEast adds

ThreadEast provides English discovery context for a retained source listing and links to the original. A first or last observed time describes our collection, not the event or article publication date. Rank and source metrics remain specific to that list. We do not provide source-platform accounts or full translation of every article, answer, or video.

These introductions use official platform descriptions and public entry points where available. Product comparisons are editorial explanations. Access can change by page, region, and visitor checks; a readable homepage does not guarantee every item is accessible. Consult source status before interpreting missing or repeated observations.
