Zhihu Hot List Explained: Questions and Recorded Rankings

Read a Zhihu hot-list question without confusing its premise, its answers, or its ranking with a verified fact.

Published / Methodology

The question is not the answer

Zhihu is a Chinese question-and-answer platform. A hot-list entry commonly points to a question and its discussion. Its wording can include a disputed premise, a hypothetical scenario, or a request for opinion. The existence of a question does not establish that its premise is true.

ThreadEast's English title describes the source listing. Read it as a translated question or topic label, not as our conclusion. The original Chinese title and link help a reader check framing that can be lost in a short translation.

A recorded position has a narrow scope

A rank is the position in the particular source list at the moment we recorded it. An answer's votes, a question's followers, and a displayed heat label are different measures. ThreadEast does not combine them into an audience estimate or claim to reproduce Zhihu's ranking algorithm.

Compare movements only within the same listing and source. A Zhihu question at rank 3 and a Weibo topic at rank 3 are not tied in national attention. Different communities and ranking systems produce different lists.

Read beyond the headline

Open the question, examine its full description, and distinguish the author's premise from the answers below it. Check dates, edits, quoted documents, and linked reporting. For specialist claims, an answer's confident tone or high vote count is not a substitute for a source.

An account's answer is that author's contribution, not a statement by everyone on Zhihu. A single hot-list observation also cannot support a claim about what Chinese people as a whole believe.

Use the archive responsibly

Our first and last observed timestamps describe collection, not the question's original publication date. Scheduled captures can miss intermediate positions and brief appearances. A stable rank across our samples means a stable recorded rank, not necessarily an unchanged ranking between samples.

When quoting an observation, record the date, the platform, the topic URL, and the limitation of the sample. Follow our platform page to inspect current coverage and our source-status page to check whether collection is working. Report translation or source-link errors through corrections.
