What is The Paper?

The Paper, known in Chinese as Pengpai Xinwen, is a Shanghai-based Chinese news and information platform. Its official introduction emphasizes public affairs, original reporting, analysis, and following stories over time. It is useful to distinguish this publishing function from a community where any member can answer a question or start a thread.

How is it different from Weibo or Zhihu?

A news article has an attributable publisher and may include a byline, reporting, quoted documents, and a publication date. A Weibo topic or Zhihu question points toward a discussion that can contain many voices. A news headline can also circulate on those services, so apparent cross-platform agreement may simply be multiple references to the same report.

Whose reporting or statement does an article contain?

Check the article's byline, credited source, and labels. Reporting by the outlet, republished material, commentary, and a statement from an institution carry different evidentiary weight. An official statement is useful for what the institution said, while independent reporting can test it. Do not assume that the website name alone establishes the original author of every item.

What does a popular-news ranking mean?

A rank in the source list records ordering within that list. It does not measure a story's factual reliability or its importance to every reader. Read past the headline for the event date, the evidence, and subsequent updates. A headline phrased as a question or attributed allegation should retain that framing in English.

A later fetch can contain an earlier report, and a correction can change its interpretation. Compare article publication and update times with ThreadEast's recorded observation before citing the ranking as a fresh development.

Can you read The Paper without an account?

Public articles are usually accessible as a guest; the official homepage was readable in our October 10 check. Comments or other features can have separate requirements. Use the complete article as the reporting source and a linked primary document where available. ThreadEast supplies English discovery context rather than a replacement for the original report.

What ThreadEast adds

ThreadEast provides English discovery context for a retained source listing and links to the original. A first or last observed time describes our collection, not the event or article publication date. Rank and source metrics remain specific to that list. We do not provide source-platform accounts or full translation of every article, answer, or video.

These introductions use official platform descriptions and public entry points where available. Product comparisons are editorial explanations. Access can change by page, region, and visitor checks; a readable homepage does not guarantee every item is accessible. Consult source status before interpreting missing or repeated observations.
