How to Read Average Salary Statistics in China: Gross Pay, Coverage and Comparisons
Check the year, employer category, survey coverage and gross-pay definition before comparing a Chinese average wage with a job offer or household income.
Published / Methodology
Start with the population, not the ranking
A Chinese average-wage headline describes a defined group of employees, not the earnings of every resident or a typical job offer. Before comparing two numbers, record the reference year, geographic area, employer category, industry, unit and wage definition. Use the original statistical notes rather than a screenshot of a ranking.
This guide is for English readers comparing Chinese salary news with an offer, a household budget or another region. It uses the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) release for 2025 as a worked example. The method is reusable; the values below belong to that release and should not be silently relabelled as current salaries.
Separate the data year from the date you found it
The NBS release was published May 15, 2026 and reports wages earned in 2025. A Caijing article displayed as published October 27, 2026 compares provincial figures from the 2026 statistical yearbook. ThreadEast observed that article on October 29. These are three different dates: a measurement period, a publication date and a collection time.
When saving a comparison, write “2025 annual wage, published in 2026,” with the table title and source URL. A new media article can discuss older data. A hot-list rank cannot establish that the statistical result is new or representative of national attention.
Keep private and non-private units separate
The 2025 NBS survey covers urban legal entities with at least five employees and excludes individual businesses and freelancers. Its private category includes specified privately registered companies, sole-proprietor enterprises and partnerships. The legal-entity qualification matters: do not turn that list into a claim that every self-employed person is covered.
Non-private units include domestic units other than the private category, including government and public institutions, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan-invested and foreign-invested enterprises. “Non-private” therefore does not mean only civil servants or state-owned employers. Keep the source’s statistical classification when translating a chart.
| Population | Annual average wage | Nominal / real growth |
|---|---|---|
| Urban non-private unit employees | CNY 129,441 | 4.3% / 4.2% |
| Urban private unit employees | CNY 71,590 | 3.0% / 2.9% |
Read gross annual pay before dividing by twelve
NBS defines the wage total as remuneration paid directly by the unit, including monetary and in-kind payments. It is before tax and includes the employee’s deductions for income tax, social insurance and housing provident fund. The notes exclude items such as dividends and realized equity-incentive returns. An average from this series is not take-home pay.
For a scale check, CNY 129,441 divided by 12 is CNY 10,786.75, and CNY 71,590 divided by 12 is approximately CNY 5,965.83. These are arithmetic monthly equivalents of annual means, not reported monthly medians, guaranteed base salaries or estimates of an individual’s bank deposit. Bonuses or other payments can be distributed unevenly during the year.
A mean does not tell you the middle worker’s pay
The NBS formula divides the wage total by the average number of employees. That is an arithmetic mean. A median would require the distribution of individual wages and identifies its midpoint; it cannot be recovered from the mean alone.
For an invented arithmetic example, four annual wages of CNY 50,000 and one of CNY 300,000 have a mean of CNY 100,000 and a median of CNY 50,000. This illustrates the distinction; it is not Chinese survey data. Likewise, do not average provincial means without employee weights and call the result a national employee mean.
Compare like with like, then state what remains unknown
Use the same reference year and employer category for both regions. Compare an industry or occupation when the source supplies one. Broad averages can change with the mix of jobs and employers, even when no particular worker receives the average increase. A table alone does not identify the causal contribution of industrial structure, migration or policy.
The NBS release labels growth as nominal unless otherwise specified, and separately gives real growth after price adjustment. Do not interpret a nominal increase as the same increase in purchasing power. Nor does an unadjusted geographic wage gap measure the cost of living or the value of a particular offer.
Use a short comparison record
Save this template: source and table; reference year; publication date; geography; covered employer category; industry or job category; annual or monthly unit; gross or net definition; mean or median; nominal or real growth; exclusions; and remaining uncertainty. If a chart omits one of these fields, follow its source or mark the field unknown.
For an offer, separately list guaranteed base pay, number of salary payments, conditional bonuses, deductions and benefits. Match the annual gross amount to a comparable statistic before considering housing and other costs. Do not infer a personal net salary by applying an arbitrary percentage to the national mean.
